preferred to leave the question of an appropriate

dollar scale to be decided in the future.

One of the two Senior Lighthouse Keepers

is at present an officer in receipt of a sterling

salary, the other is on a dollar salary scale of

$3,600 to $4,800 by $120 annually. The new scale

proposed is identical with that of the second of

these officers except that it provides increments

of $150 instead of $120. I think the serving officer

should be allowed to benefit by this and that each of

his future increments should be $150 until he reaches

the maximum of $4,800.

The posts in the grade of Assistant

Lighthouse Keeper have hitherto been on a scale of $2,100 to $2,700 by $150 annually. The obvious

disadvantage of this scale is that it is too short

for a grade in which officers must normally serve at

least ten years before obtaining promotion.
